The following 2 hacks increase system performance significantly for me. They make the Q much more responsive:
Some improvement, but not a significant amount, different users after reported better responses though (
Open that up and you'll see a list of mp3 files.
All you have to do is append your own audio files (mp3, wma, or wav) to the list. Then you have to make sure that you place your new audio clips in the \Windows folder so that they are accessible.
The next time you go to the sounds events page, the drop down menu will contain the new clips you added.
I'd be really cautious about changing the startup wav. You don't want the phone to lock if the audio file doesn't load. I converted my wav to 16bit, stereo, 22khz WAV file. I didn't use mp3 or WMA. This seems to work fine.
1. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox
2. Next, click on Inbox (make sure the Inbox is highlighted) and select Edit, New Key
3. Name the New Key as "Settings"
4. Click on "Settings" (make sure the Settings is highlighted) and select Edit, New String Value
5. On "Value name:", key in SMSNoSentMsg and in "Value data", key in 1
6. Soft reset your device and test it with one SMS, and you will notice that the SMS Sent bubble is being disabled
and change the value of the string "Folder" to "My Documents".
OK, for those of you that want to believe the "Data Connect" arrows-n-bars icon means you're connected and transferring data (instead of believing the "Data Transfer" phone-symbol icon indicates an actual transfer) or that it infers higher battery drain, let me offer you the following solution. Open up your registry editor and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings
Make the following changes to these values:
CacheTime: Change the "Value data" to the number of seconds you want the connection to hold after your phone software has stopped requesting data (10 - 30 seconds might be appropriate)
SuspendResume: In the "Value data" box, delete the #777 and replace with GPRS_bye_if_device_off
Save out of your registry editor and restart the phone (turn off then turn on). From now on, your phone will fully disconnect (i.e. the icon will show your Bars only instead of the data arrows) after the number of seconds you entered in CacheTime. This is good news, bad news:
Good news: Those of you that feel a dormant connection doesn't exist, still transfers data, or eats up your battery, will feel better.
Bad News: If you access your data a lot (VZWSync, Wireless Activesync, frequent scheduled email checks, and the like), every time you access your data, your phone will have to reconnect, renegotiate a password, receive an IP address assignment, and then begin the process of fetching the information you wanted from the web. This will cause delays and in the more extreme cases (VZWSync/Activesync) increase your battery consumption noticeably.
In short, choose to do this based on your habits. For folks that continually sync, I would not recommend this hack. For occasional connectors, this will work out fine for you - although you will find web surfing to seem "slower" if you pause on a page longer than the timeout period you entered in CacheTime.
As with any registry editing activity, novices beware and experienced folks, don't forget to either back up or at least remember what you're over-writing. If you break it, then you have to fix it.
Enjoy.
Povecajte Call HistoryNavigate to:
\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Phone
"CallHistoryMax" contains the number of numbers that will be kept in history. I.e. change it to 100
You just need to create the key string and set the value to whatever you like. Mine is displaying all calls made since 06/09 when I purchased the device. 500+ calls
http://www.pocketpctweaks.com/pocketpc_tweaks/change_call_history_sizeRemove Labels Under IconsWhile messing around in the registry I found this "hack/mod". Dunno if anyone else is interested, but here it is.
Go to \HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Shell\StartMenu
Change hide_labels value from 0 to 1
The end result will be this:

No labels under the icons, but name of highlighted icon appears on Title Bar. Different, but I like it.
Word of warning, this will cause the Start Menu to appear in some Task Managers (QTask, CeleTask) as the highlighted icon label, so you may not want to try to kill it.
Change Start Menu into List Instead of GridNavigate to:
\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shell\StartMenu
Change the GridView value to 0 if you want list view.
Change it to 1 if you want grid view.
Note: I prefer the standard grid view to the list view. (

Change WMP Default Library to Storage CardHere is a registry change that will allow you to change your default library in Media Player from "My Device" to "Storage Card"
Change:
KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences\LastLibraryIndex
From 0 to 1.
Use QuickApp key for something else!
[/u]
Here's one I haven't seen yet:
I wanted faster access to my task manager, and I wasn't using the QuickApp menu. (the one with airplane mode)
This registry key controls what launches when you press-and-hold the home key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:MSQuickApp\1
The default value is QuickApp.exe ... you can change it to anything, for example to TaskManager.exe or in my case:
"\Program Files\Resco\RTaskMan.exe"
If the program you want to launch is not in the Windows directory, you should specify the full path and use quotes as shown above.
Also, this seems to take effect immediately, no need to restart the phone!
Change Video Camera Quality / Change Fonts/ Remap Device KeysForgive me if any of these have already been discovered, but here are some I have discovered on my own:
[Change video camera quality] (changes bitrate to 512Kbps)[EDIT]I have posted more information in my thread including minor side effects[EDIT]http://www.qusers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4532&start=15HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Pictures/Camera/OEM/VideoEncoderProperty/1
This is the property for BITRATE
Edit the Key VidoepropertyValue (Yes, it is spelled Vidoe on the key)
Default is approx 128kbps, I have modified up to 512kbps (512000)
Works like a charm and video looks nice.
(Note, this also seems to boost framerate from 10FPS to 15FPS.
[Remap device keys]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Motorola/Keypad
Keys of interest:
0x14 Default is SPKPHN (Speakerphone/Voicecommand)
0x15 Default is EMAIL (Messaging/Backlight)
0x24 Default is JOGSELECT (Trackwheel click ? Unconfirmed)
0x32 Default is CAMERA (Camera button)
0x34 Default is SIDEBACK (Back button below trackwheel)
0x36 Default is SOFT2 (Right soft key ? Unconfirmed)
0x44 Default is SOFT1 (Left soft key ? Unconfirmed)
0x65 Default is TALK (Green Talk key ? Unconfirmed)
0x67 Default is HOME (Home key)
You can interchange the values, although I would recomend against remapping some of them, such as softkeys. But you may want to make other keys (like the side button) perform the same function as another. I have my side key now set to do SPKPHN, which is pretty handy.
If anyone can figure out what to type in to have a button activate calendar, let me know!
(I've tried CALENDAR, CALNDR, OUTLOOK, and POUTLOOK, none are correct)
[Change Font style for menus]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/GWE/Menu/PopFnt/
Change the key "It" to a value of 1 for Italics (looks nice)
Change the key "Ht" to a higher or lower value for larger or smaller font
Change the key "Nm" for a different font
(Hard to tell, but looks like using Segoe instead of Segoe Condensed works and results in a little more spacing in the font)
[Change System Font style]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/GDI/SYSFNT
Same as values above for menus, although Italics gets a little obnoxious everywhere.
[More sound profiles][EDIT]
This doesn't appear to work after the Moto Q update, sorry[EDIT]
This one can be a bit daunting, but is great if you want more options for sound profiles
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/Profiles
First step is to create a new Key with the name of the profile you want.
Next, you have to copy the values from an existing profile into your profile key
Then, you must change the data to match in the value for EditName and Name to match the name of your profile Key
(Note, I'm not sure why some profiles have an EditName tag and some have a LocName tag)
I assume it has something to do with renaming the Profile in the Profiles area of the control panel, as well as the Automatic setting which is supposed to switch profiles if your calendar says busy, but that never seemed to work for me).
Then, you must change the value for Order to an order for it to appear in the profiles list.
(Special note, if you don't want it to appear at the end, you will need to set the Order for all of the other items (Speakerphone, Car, Automatic, etc) to their new position in the list)
Finally, go in and edit your new profile with the options you wish to use.
I used this to make a "Quiet" profile, so I now have Loud, Normal, Quiet, Vibrate Only, and Silent.
BTW, all of these except the bitrate mod require a reboot to take affect.
As with any Reg hack, use caution. If you set something unusual, you may not be able to get in to change it. (Think of setting system font wrong and then having text too small or too large to use).

Turn off Shutter Sound for CameraNavigate to:
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Pictures\Camera\OEM\SoundFile
In the SoundFile key:
Modify the string/value \windows\shuttersound_02_secs.wav to say \windows\*none*
Yes it should have the ** around none
NOTE: Yes it does work perfectly (

There's a better (and simpler) hack to get rid of the Camera shutter sound.
Navigate to the key \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Pictures\Camera\OEM\
Change the ShutterSoundVolume value from 32768 to 0 and reset the Q.
You don't need to use some obscure file name.
That's why it's simpler. It's better because you can also keep the shutter sound, but not have it be so annoyingly loud, by using a value of 16384 instead.
DISCLAIMER: This value is on my Verizon Q after the software update. I don't know if it's on pre-update Qs or not. If it's not, try creating it.
NOTE: I also tried an even simpler fix, changing the ForceShutterSound value from 1 to 0, but that didn't work.

Page Up and Page Down in IEKey mapping for "Page Up" and "Page Down" in Internet Explorer
1. Open your favorite registry editor then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
2. Create a new key 'KeyMaps' (without the quotes)
3. Under KeyMaps, create 2 new DWORD values:
50 with a value data 1 (this will make key "2" Page Up)
56 with a value data 2 (this will make key "8" Page Down)
I created 2 more DWORD values:
52 with a value date 5 (this will make key "4" Page Left)
54 with a value date 6 (this will make key "6" Page Right)
The key name is the keycode you want. 50 = Key 2, 56 = Key 8, 52 = Key4, and 54 = Key 6.
Other DWORD values available are:
1 - Page Up
2 - Page Down
3 - Top
4 - Bottom
5 - Left
6 - Page Rignt
7 - Horizontal Top
8 - Horizontal Down
9 - Default Layout
10 - Desktop Layout
11 - One Column Layout

To get rid of this or to change it...
1.)Upload the desired image to /windows.
The default VZW image is 240x27. However the author, tonyxcom, says: "Oh, and you can pretty much make the image any size you want. I made mine 320. If you make it any less wide, it will get stretched."
2.)Navigate to:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Rai/:MSCdial/
Click on the String/Value

Type in the string field: /windows/YourImagesName.jpg
YourImagesName.jpg being the name of the file you put in the /windows folder in Step 1.

Change Startup Microsoft Splash ScreenThe file that we are dealing with is "ms_screen.png". The system uses this file for both the startup and shutdown screens. There are 2 ways to do this mod. The first is to create another image file named ms_screen.png, and move it into your windows directory. Of course it will need to be 320x240, and I would save in PNG format just to be safe. Be sure to make a backup of the original just in case you happen to botch something.
The method that I chose was to create a PNG file, again 320x240, and save it under a different filename. Then, move this file into the Windows directory. Now it's time to edit the registry to point to this new file.
The registy keys are located at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Splash Screen
We are interested in the CarrierBitmap, MSBitmap, and MSShutdownBitmap keys. They point to the \Windows\ms_screen.png file by default. Change all 3 to the new filename, and restart the Q. You should see your new startup logo after the Verizon logo and animations, prior to your Home screen coming up.
