Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)

GIF format files are a proprietary to Compuserve, Inc. Many are reluctant to use them thinking that at some time Compuserve might enforce their copyright and charge a fee for all files of this type. However, it is the oldest image compression type used on the Web, and it has several attributes that are not possible with the other types.

    * GIF compression requires that the colors in the image be first reduced to no more than 256 colors (8 bit graphics).
    * Once reduced to 8 bit color, images do not lose data thereafter (ie., it is "non-lossey" compression).
    * GIF images may be animated and still have fairly small file sizes.
    * Background colors around the image may be made transparent.
    * Very large images may load quickly by progressive loading of higher resolution versions (interlaced).

Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)

Files of the JPEG format are compressed according to the protocol outlined by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. The file extensions .jpg, .jpeg and .jpe are recognized by modern Web browsers as JPEG format files.

    * JPEG compression is full 24 bit color (millions of colors).
    * JPEG is a "lossey" compression; once a file is jpeg-ed it never has the same resolution as before (data is discarded), so a rule of thumb is to save the original as uncompressed.
    * Several degrees of compression are possible, resulting in a range of very small files with less resolution to very large files of excellent resolution.
    * JPEG files cannot be animated, nor can their boundaries be made transparent.

Portable Network Graphics (PNG)

PNG refers to the "portable network graphic" file type. This compression methodology is fairly new, and may not be recognized by all browsers. For example, when Netscape Navigator attempts to load a .png file, it boots the QuickTime player to view the image.

    * PNG compression is a "non-lossey" type of compression. It was developed in part to avoid the need to use Compuserve GIF files.
    * PNG images may be up to 48 bit "true color" while still having better compression than GIF files.
    * Similar to GIF files, PNG files may have variable transparency colors. They also display 2 dimensional interlacing, but cannot be made into animations.
    * Compressed file sizes for continuous tone images are not as good as JPEG, so for photographs JPEG is a better choice for the Web. However, remember that if an original is saved as a JPEG, some data loss always occurs.

Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)

XML Graphics for the Web

SVG is a language for describing two-dimensional graphics and graphical applications in XML. SVG 1.1 is a W3C Recommendation and forms the core of the current SVG developments. SVG Tiny 1.2 is the specification currently being developed as the core of the SVG 1.2 language (comments welcome). The SVG Mobile Profiles: SVG Basic and SVG Tiny are targeted to resource-limited devices and are part of the 3GPP platform for third generation mobile phones. SVG Print is a set of guidelines to produce final-form documents in XML suitible for archiving and printing. Read more about SVG.
Information about REX Patent Advisory Group (PAG)

As announced on 22 December 2006, W3C launched a Patent Advisory Group (PAG) in accordance with the W3C Patent Policy. The PAG was launched in response to disclosures by France Telecom related to the Remote Events for XML (REX) specification. The SVG Working Group and Web API Working Group jointly develop this specification. W3C launches a PAG to resolve issues in the event a patent has been disclosed that may be essential, but is not available under the W3C Royalty-Free licensing requirements. Public comments regarding these disclosures may be sent to public-rex-pag@w3.org (public archive). Members may consult the Member-only REX PAG home page for more information.

Renesis SVG Player Launches Version 0.7

A new Release v0.7 of the Standalone and IE-Pluginable Renesis® SVG Player is out. What's special on this version is the all-in-new Font and Text Engine which supports things like Unicode, Embedded Fonts, Text Selection, Copy to Clipboard, Text-Anchoring, Font-Stretching, Text-Decorations and much much more. The perfomance of the text engine should have improved as well. Other news are many many bugfixes and improvements based on our bugtracker as well as fixing one huge issue that caused a lot of crashes on various platforms. The next release is planned for somewhere between Juli and August 2007 and will mainly be a maintenance Release that will get a completely rewritten DOM Structure (not the EcmaScript binding!). Why should you care? As of now, inserting a lot of elements (especially text nodes) causes a lot of memory overhead and speed loss. The new structure system should shorten down the used memory to as low as 30-40% for dynamic changes as well as speed up the dynamic changes by a factor of 4-10x at a minimum so stay tuned! As always, comments, thoughts and questions are always very welcome into our forum.

Open Source Drawing Program for Children Receives SVG Support

Five years after the debut of its award-winning Open Source drawing program for children, New Breed Software is happy to announce the release of Tux Paint 0.9.17.

Among numerous other updates and improvements, Tux Paint's well-loved Stamp tool is now cleaner, more flexible, and easier to use than ever. The addition of a smoothing filter minimizes pixelation when photographic stamps are scaled up, while newly added support for the Scalable Vector Graphics file format allows for byte-thrifty stamps that can scale up without any pixelation or blurring at all. Lastly, the constantly growing collection of stamps is now separated into categories (plants, animals, holidays, and so forth) for easier navigation.

For a complete list of changes, see the Tux Paint change log and Tux Paint Stamps change log.

Tux Paint 0.9.17 is available immediately for Microsoft Windows and Linux, with a Mac OS X version coming soon. It is available for download free of charge from the Tux Paint website.
